Red Sox Chick/Toeing the Rubber

Because you always need a backup plan

Too bad Gary Thorne wasn’t playing tonight…

Up yours, Thorne
…so Beckett could drill him in the ass with  a fast ball.

I love how, in the article referenced here, Gordon Edes feels the need to say Thorne has a "solid national reputation" because he’s worked on ESPN.  Give me a break.

He comes out and starts a lie about Schilling’s sock in 2004 being paint not blood because Schilling is kicking his team’s ass.  Giving fuel to the idiots, like the many Yankees fans online last night, who believe such things.

Schilling’s sock is a Hall of Fame artifact. I’m quite certain they wouldn’t uphold some massive lie about that.  And what about all the guys from the 2004 team who aren’t in Boston any longer?  Does ANYONE think if this was true that Doug Mientkiewicz wouldn’t have told the world already?

Or Pedro Martinez?  Anyone think he wouldn’t have used this to disparage Curt given their, supposed, tenuous relationship.

For what it’s worth, Oriole Kevin Millar came out and said that, OF COURSE it was real.  Up yours, Thorne.

Doug Mirabelli claims he doesn’t even know Thorne.  Mirabelli is the perfect guy to lay this on.  He has a reputation within the press corps.  He’s not their favorite boy.  I hope Thorne gets reprimanded big time for this, the asshole

In less cranky news, Schilling and Sox kicked the butts of the Orioles and their bullpen last night.  Had to feel a little sorry for Daniel Cabrera, who pitched a good game only to watch his mistakes and his bullpen mess things up.  And may I just say, please continue to start Alex Cora, Tito?  Thank you.

Bronson made his fifth start of the season and pitched well AGAIN only giving up 1 run…guess what he didn’t do?  He didn’t win.  7 innings, five hits last night, no wins this season…oh Bronson.  At least we have Wily Mo, right?  Ugh.

During the game, Remy and Orsillo noted that the Orioles spent $41 million to revamp the bullpen.  Near the end of the game, Remy said that the Orioles were watching $41 million being flushed away.

No wonder Thorne was such an ass.  :-)

Okay, I have to rant a little more.  Thorne throws this out there last night with little more than a "Mirabelli said so, ask him" and people are going to believe him?  The Red Sox have an entire team, the doctor (Bill Morgan, who was FIRED from the team and still insists it was real) and the Hall of Fame.  It will be disappointing if Thorne doesn’t get reprimanded for this.

I can’t wait to hear what he says about this tonight.

  1. Cyn, Thorne has proven, without doubt, that he is an idiot. Maybe he realizes that the O’s have beaten our Sox only three times since the start of ‘06 and he ran out of things to stir up emotions. A huge mistake….he makes such a great impression as a buffoon, or maybe, dare I say, baboon! Go Sox, go Josh, your one and only shot for five victories in the month of April. It doesn’t get much better!!!!!

  2. I hate this type of crap. You can lie about someone, and that lie makes national news. But as soon as the truth/retraction comes out, it only makes the back of the newspaper…..and everyone still just remembers the lie. I hope Curt hits this jerk with a lawsuit so hard it knockes him back into the Stone Age.

  4. People like Thorne just depress me. I’ve been working as a journalist for over a decade (I covered the Sox for the briefly lived monthly Boston Chronicle back in 1996) and have gotten some big interviews (Steve Sabol, Shannon Miller), but have been unable to crack the industry with any major daily or with any of the big-boys of sports coverage – and somebody as sloppy and inattentive as that regularly gets gigs…that always bothers me.

  7. Why doesn’t the CSI do a DNA test on the sock and end the issue once and for all.

  10. Okay, I am an idiot. I can’t figure out how to post a comment on Curt’s blog. Anyway, someone HAS to convince Curt to get that damn sock DNA tested and put this idiocy to bed once and for all.I know it’s not "right" that he should have to do this. And in a perfect world he should just be able to take the "high road" and ignore the accusations. But we live in a world of idiots. And when people (Thorne) promote such lies (even if it was off-the-cuff), the lies become "the truth" for a lot of people. (And by "people" I mean Yankees fans with IQ’s in the single digits.)And that kind of crap not only is an insult to Curt, but to Red Sox fans everywhere. So please, someone tell Curt to just have the damn sock tested. Not for him. But for us.

  11. Hey Cyn! Took me a while to find your new blog, but here I am. I actually watched the MASN broadcast last night, but somehow I missed this BS. One point to remember, though, is that the sock in the Hall of Fame is NOT the one from Game 6 of the ALCS. Its the sock from Game 2 of the 04 World Series.cheers

  12. "Thorne has a "solid national reputation" because he’s worked on ESPN."I guess Gordon forgets that ESPN once employed Rush Limbaugh and still has Michael Irvin on staff…

  13. Gary Thorne has nothing better to talk about because the Baltimore Orioles are boring! We all know that Schilling should be commended for his efforts.

  14. What was that you were saying about Wily Mo? That aside, I will say that I’ve seen the "bloody sock" in the HOF and I was disappointed at how time had made it look quite rusty and not blood red. Of course that is what happens to real blood stains. They turn rusty colored as they oxidize. Seems to me that people are scared of the Sox this year. COOL!

  15. While I am overjoyed at WMP’s grandslam…I still groan more than cheer when he’s up at bat!

    Comment by Cyn | April 27, 2007 |

  16. I was listening to the Orioles broadcasters last night and my mouth fell open when I heard Thorne make the comment about Curt’s bloody sock. Totally asinine!I groan when Wily Mo comes up to bat but I also seem to be groaning a lot when other teammates are coming up to bat. The pitcher loads the bases with 3 walks and they don’t score! Ugh!

  17. I thought (and after this incident I wonder if I’m wrong) that Gary Thorne, deep down,is a Red Sox fan having grown up in Maine.Has anyone else thought/heard the same thing? Finally, Isn’t it sweet to be in first, and have the Yankees in last? (esp. as I live in NYC?) I’d love a sweep this weekend but will settle for 2-of-3.GO, SOX!-Steve
